WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE LOST OR FOUND A PET OR OTHER ANIMAL

Report all lost or found pets to shelters in your area. In fact, finders are legally required to file a report with shelters in the area. Some jurisdictions have laws that mandate that all strays “must” be surrendered to the receiving shelter. Therefore, contacting the shelter(s) in your area is the first step. Finders are also required to make a “reasonable” effort to locate an owner. This includes, not only reporting to shelters, but placing a classified ad and posting to social media or other websites for lost and found pets. Finders are generally required to hold a found pet for 5 business days (considered to be a full 7 days including weekends). A shelter is the first place an owner will look for their lost pet and not everyone uses social media or will have internet access in times of natural or manmade disasters. If you have found a pet, have the animal scanned for a microchip at any vet, shelter or rescue (free). If you are unable to hold a pet for the required amount of time you must surrender the animal to a shelter. Drop two copies of your flyer off at every shelter, stray holding facility and vet clinic in your area (one for the public bulletin board and one for the staff).

***This is an outline of what is generally required under “normal” circumstances. Please defer to the receiving shelter in your city and state for the exact legal requirements and any changes due to disaster conditions.***Post a lost or found pet to social media pages and groups, ie Facebook. Although there will be newly formed pages and groups specific to a hurricane or other disaster, you are strongly urged to post to pre existing pages and groups for lost and found pets. Their admins, followers and members are knowledgeable of and can advise you with regard to further and more current info specific to your area.

NOTE: Please use the following format when posting on Facebook

Date… Lost or Found… City and State

Description of the animal, ie gender, color and breed (“keywords” such as color or breed will allow people to search facebook using that criteria)

Name of the contact person and phone number (with widespread power outages this will be the most reliable form of communication)

Upload a picture.

***Please update (edit) your original post(s) as updates become available. That way all the “shared” posts get updated as well. Ie., if an animal is reunited then people will know to focus their attention on those still needing help.

There are several websites where you may file a lost or found report. We strongly suggest you visit the most widely used website, Petharbor, which is a national adoptable and lost and found database. A section of their website is generally set up for a disaster event. You can file and view lost and found reports by the public and view affiliated shelter’s intakes. Not all shelters are affiliated with Petharbor and for several reasons not all intakes may be pictured

If you do not see your pet or have not yet found your pet, GO to your local shelters and do a walk through every 2 days or daily, if possible. Ask to see isolation/medical rooms as well.

Place an ad on Craigslist in the Community pages and in the Lost and Found and Pets sections.
